Gemmologically, tiger's eye is a pseudomorph of quartz after crocidolite: it began as blue asbestos (crocidolite, a fibrous riebeckite), which was gradually replaced by silica (quartz) during geological processes while retaining its parallel fibrous structure. Those parallel fibres are exactly what create the signature moving band of light.
2. Composition and the Chatoyant Effect
The "body" of tiger's eye is silicon dioxide, SiO₂ (quartz), and its "soul" is the residual parallel fibrous inclusions (the remnants of altered crocidolite). The colour shifts depending on how far the crocidolite was oxidised during replacement:

Tiger's eye is not expensive, but the market still has fakes and mislabels — know these:
- Glass imitation: the most common. Glass can show a "bright line", but it is a fixed reflection that does not move when rotated, and often has bubbles and an overly uniform "plastic" glow. Natural tiger's eye sheen shifts lively with angle.
- Resin / plastic imitation: feels warm (natural quartz is cool), is too light, and lacks true fibrous structure — obvious under a loupe.
- Dyeing / recolouring: light or mixed material dyed darker or into red/blue tones. Natural colour is internal and follows the fibres; dye pools in fractures, looks dead, and may bleed.
- Confused with "Cat's Eye" (Chrysoberyl): true "cat's eye" in gemmology means the chrysoberyl cat's-eye variety, far more valuable than quartz tiger's eye. Both are called "cat's eye", but the minerals are entirely different — look for the distinction between Tiger's Eye and Cat's Eye Chrysoberyl.
